Fedora Core 4 and net.ipv4.ipfrag_max_dist

We recently published a discussion detailing how to add the net.ipv4.ipfrag_max_dist key to your Sysctl config in order to alleviate the dropped frames problem people were seeing with the new NOVRA S300 receivers and the DVB-S2 NOAAPORT signal. In our internal testing, we have discovered that not all systems require this change.

On systems we set up running Fedora Core 4, the net.ipv4.ipfrag_max_dist key is not recognized by the kernel. The lack of the key didn’t appear to affect the DVB-S2 signal, and we ran the system for 24 hours with the NOVRA S300 with zero dropped frames.


The NWS has communicated that they have resolved all pending issues with the new DVB-S2 -SBN/NOAAPORT- signal. Operational activation of the new DVB-S2 signal will take place on May 20, 2011.

The dual illumination period for the DVB-S/DVB-S2 signals will remain active for an additional 28 days, until the evening of June 17th, 2011.

The NWS also confirmed the new frequency for the new signal will be 1154.15MHZ.

Unisys Weather will be contacting customers with an updated shipping plan for the new S300 receivers.

NOVRA S300 – New firmware released

NOVRA recently released a firmware update for their S300 receivers. The new firmware version is V2R7, and includes modifications to improve data reception on the new NOAAPORT feed. We have updated all customer receivers to the new firmware version, and will continue to monitor the progress of NWS testing of the new DVB-S2 signal.
